The pilots were also asked what improvements aze needed at . <br />their chosen reliever airport. Instrument landing capabilities, <br />FBO services/security,ground transportation, andsnowremoval <br />were very important to all aircraft operators. Runway length <br />at reliever airports was important to all operators except the <br />single-engine piston owners. <br />Tf additional runway length is required, the survey asked what <br />length is needed. The single-engine piston, multiengine piston, <br />and multiengine turboprop operators answered 4,000 to 5,000 <br />feet; the majority of business jet operators said somewhere <br />between 5,000 and 7,000 feet. Most of the respondents <br />answered that an additional reliever was not needed to <br />supplement the system's geographic coverage. Those that <br />thought an additional reliever was needed indicated a need to <br />the north, and some in the west of the Minneapolis-St Paul <br />area. <br />The last question addressed the issue of a new air carrier airport <br />in the area and asked how this would impact trips to the Twin <br />Cities. Of the responses, 36 percent said they would use a new <br />major airport, while 30 percent said they would use a reliever. <br />Those that answered they would use a reliever were asked which <br />one they preferred. St. Paul Downtown received the largest <br />percentage of responses and Flying Cloud the next <br />Overall, the survey indicated that transient pilots use <br />Minneapolis-St Paul International an average of less than 10 <br />operations a year. Most transient pilots use Minneapolis-St. <br />Paul International mainly because their passengers require it. <br />The annual operations reported by transient pilots responding <br />to the survey represent approximately 6 percent of total <br />transient-related activity. Of those transient pilots responding, <br />almost half indicated that their operations could be transferred <br />from Minneapolis-$t. Paul International to one of the reliever <br />airports, providing that adequate facilities were available at the <br />reliever airports. If this sample response is expanded to the <br />entire population of transient operations, this would indicate <br />that it may be possible to reduce transient general aviation <br />activity at Minneapolis-St Paul International by roughly 18,000 <br />annual operations. <br />Registered Aircraft Owners Survey <br />The majority of respondents to this survey based an aircraft . <br />inside the seven-county region.
