AC 150/5300-48 6/24/75 <br />building. In many cases, the initial airport building is a small <br />maintenance hangar with attached office. Consider the following basic <br />criteria prior to construction of an administrative type of building <br />on a general aviation airport: <br />a. A minimum traffic volume of 10 airplane departures and arrivals, <br />not including touch and go, during the peak hours of a typically <br />busy day during the year. <br />b. One or more active fixed base operators on the airport. <br />c. Airplane fuel available on the airport. <br />d. A hangar with repair facilities in operation on the airport. <br />e. A full-time airport manager on duty during the normal day. <br />f. Public waiting area and restrooms, if they are not already available <br />in hangars or other buildings on the airport. A public telephone <br />should be available 24 hours a day for closing flight plans or <br />requesting fuel or transportation to town. <br />48. AIRPORT SURVEY. A survey of airport aviation activity should be made <br />before the building is planned. For survey purpose,"airport aviation <br />activity" includes the number of active -based airplanes, the number of <br />airplane operations (local and itinerant), the number of pilots and <br />passengers, and the number of visitors at the airport on a typically <br />busy day. <br />a. The number and type of facilities the administration building <br />requires calls for a survey of current activity at the airport. <br />In addition, it is usually possible to obtain valuable information <br />from other airports with similar aviation activity characteristics <br />and which already have administration buildings. <br />b. The survey is rather simple to make. Data can be gathered by the <br />hour and recorded as shown on sample Evaluation Sheet 1 (Figure <br />10-3). The airport manager or a fixed base operator can gather <br />this information on several typically busy days over a period of <br />several weeks, preferably during the most active season. At many <br />small airports, weekends are usually the busiest days and are a <br />good time to measure peak activity. A Pilots Register is also <br />useful in making a traffic count. <br />c. Evaluation Sheet 2 (Figure 10-4) is an example of the kind of data <br />that can be gathered in a survey of present facilities to help <br />determine what new or improved facilities are needed. <br />Page 52 <br />Chap 10 <br />Par 47 <br />• <br />
