Commissioners in September 1987., 1/ The incentive to build this
proposed airport reflects the envisioned growth of the west metropolitan
area of Minneapolis -St. Paul. Findings and recommendations made in this
study include:
Sufficient local, regional, and State support exists for a new
local General Utility - Stage I airport in Carver County; this
conclusion was based on existing data, trends in local and
metropolitan air transportation demand, and pilot questionnaire
responses.
A Carver County airport should have facilities to serve 50
based aircraft with the capacity to expand.
The airport should be a General Utility - Stage I airport. The
required runway length for the designated critical aircraft (C-
90 Beech King Air) is 3,900 feet. A potential runway expansion
to 5,000 feet would dictate when additional land would be
purchased.
The County share of the proposed first phase of development
was estimated at $275,659 for an operational facility with no
public apron or buildings; $408,750 for a facility with public
apron and a small arrival/departure building, but no county -
owned hangars; and $523,880 for a facility with a public apron
and county -owned T-hangars.
The status of the Carver County site will be carefully monitored as
this reliever system plan progresses.
2. Airport Search Area Site A
The other potential airport site in the metropolitan area is a general
area located in the northwestern portion Hennepin County. Airport
Search Area Site A (Site A) has been proposed for these reasons:
Crystal Airport and Flying Cloud Airport have filled hangars
and limited potential for expansion.
Site A has ample ground access with good access to suburban
areas.
. (There is land available in the Site A area.)
The site is compatible with airspace needs
1/ Howard, Needles, Tammen & Bergendoff, "Carver County Airport Feasibility
Study," September 1987.
I-12
