The NPIAS presents airport development data for public -use airports in the
United States and identifies federal funding eligibility levels for the airports.
Each of the airport classification systems has a unique role in the reliever
study. The Metropolitan Council classifications relate to the policies established for
the region, while the federal system is utilized for FAA technical standards.
Finally, the NPIAS classifications are used in the implementation phase of this
study, particularly as funding issues arise.
5. AIRPORT FACILrI'lbS AND ACTIVITY
This section provides inventory data for MSP and existing reliever system
airports. Data provided in this section includes:
• Landside Facilities
• Airside Facilities
▪ NAVAIDS
• Airport Activity Statistics
(1) Landside Facilities
In order to assess the adequacy of the study airports to meet current and
future demand, a list of major landside facilities was compiled as part of the
inventory effort. Inventoried landside facilities include aircraft storage
facilities, terminal area, and parking (See Table I-3).
(2) Airside Facilities
Airside facilities include runways, taxiways, and ramp area. It is
important to document these facilities to determine the adequacy of individual
reliever airports, as well as the reliever system, in meeting current and future
demand. Table I-4 lists airside facilities for the study airport.
I-20
