relieve frequency congestion by automating the repetitive
transmission of essential but routine information.
Automatic Directional Finder JADE) - An aircraft radio navigation
system that senses and indicates the direction to an L/MF
nondirectional radio beacon (NDB) ground transmitter.
Distance Measuring Eauinment (DMEI - Equipment (airborne and
ground) used to measure, in nautical miles, the slant range distance
of an aircraft from the DME navigational aid (see VORTAC or
Microwave Landing System).
VHF Omnidirectional Range/Tactical Air Navigation f VORTACI - A
navigational aid providing VOR azimuth, TACAN azimuth, and
TACAN distance measuring equipment (DME) at one site.
Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Ranee Station (VOR) - A
ground -based electronic navigational aid transmitting very high
frequency navigation signals, 360 degrees in azimuth, oriented from
magnetic north, periodically identifying itself by Morse Code.
Wind Sock - Cloth sleeve, mounted aloft at an airport and used to
estimate wind direction and velocity. I/
Wind Tee - Indicator of wind direction for takeoff and landings. 1/
After initial inventory investigation, a major difference in offered
NAVAID facilities was noted between MSP and the other system airports.
Because part of the reliever study focuses on the potential to draw general
aviation traffic away from MSP, it is important to examine NAVAID facilities
at MSP. The following are a list of additional navigational facilities found at
MSP:
Low Level Wind -Shear Alert System (LLW-SAS) - A system to alert
pilots of wind shears, a change in wind speed and/or wind direction
m a short distance, critical during landing.
• Runway Visual Range (RVR) - An instrumentally derived value, based
on standard calibration, that represents the horizontal distance a
pilot will see down the runway from its approach end.
• Simplified Short Approach Lighting System (SSALR) - High intensity
lighting system with runway alignment indicator lights.
1/ Aviation Fundamentals, 6th Edition, 1981.
I-22
