8) If developed as a basic utility airport in accordance with <br />state and federal criteria, the airport will become a signi- <br />ficantly more attractive facility for based aircraft owners <br />in the northwest metropolitan area. <br />9) The present airport consists of a 2500 L.F. x 135 feet <br />primary runway, oriented 16-34 and a crosswind runway <br />approximately 2365 L.F. x 130' oriented 9-27. The runways <br />are dirt surfaces with like surfaced taxiways from each <br />runway to the arrival/departure facilities. The runways are <br />lighted with a low intensity temporary aviation lighting <br />system (TALS). <br />The airport has no terminal navigation aids. The arrival/ <br />departure area includes buildings, tee hangars, fuel service <br />and tie down area. Four buildings are owned by the Anoka <br />Vocational Technical Institute. <br />10) Fifty-six percent of the pilots surveyed felt that a lighted <br />r..vea s,400 L.F. airport was a needed improvement and 20%. <br />felt that a paved 2,800 L.F. airport would be sufficient. <br />The next closest item pilots felt was needed was fuel and <br />maintenance services with 18% indicating this item as a <br />priority. <br />11) A survey of local businesses was made from an area including <br />the Cities of Anoka, Ramsey and Elk River. Some of the <br />local businesses in, the area which commented that improve- <br />ments were needed are United Power Assoc., H&S Asphalt, Mate <br />Punch & Die Company and Cargill Research Firm. Government <br />agencies stating interest were Metro Mosquito Control, Anoka <br />State Hospital and the National Guard. <br />12) Over 30 aircraft were based at the field within recent years <br />including a light twin engine aircraft. As of mid-1984, the <br />number of based aircraft as determined by the FBO was 12. <br />13) Specifically, the driving factors for growth at Gateway <br />Airport are long term assurance to aircraft owners are that <br />the airport will continue in operation, a paved runway, <br />reasonable and consistent ground services and hangar <br />availability. <br />14) As shown. by 1995. approximately_l5_hased aircraft are <br />forecast increasing £rrapproximately 50_to 60 within the 20 <br />year planning period. <br />15) The forecast thus projects approximately 24,000 annual <br />operations by 1994 increasing to over 35,000 annual opera- <br />tions by the end of the 20 year planning period. <br />2-2 <br />
