CASE # 2
UPDATE ON 161ST AVENUE & ARMSTRONG BLVD PEDESTRIAN CROSSING
By: Steven Jankowski, Assistant City Engineer
Background:
At the April 21, 2009 Public Works Committee meeting, staff discussed a number of potential
safety improvement suggested by Mr. Pat Surma who resides at 7930 161't Lane for the
intersection of 161St Lane and Armstrong Boulevard. These suggestions included:
Placing crosswalk across Armstrong Boulevard with a flashing yellow light to add extra
emphasis.
2. Adding a second Stop sign on the west leg of this intersection
3. Clearing brush on the west leg of the intersection to improve visibility of the existing stop
signs.
The third item was undertaken and completed by the City's public works department since the
brush was in the right of way of 161St Avenue and within the jurisdiction of the City. However,
the first two items require the action of the Anoka County Highway Department since these
activities would be located within the right of way of Armstrong Boulevard, CSAH 83.
Council directed that a letter be drafted to Anoka County Highway Department requesting the
following safety improvements be considered. Attached is a copy of the letter sent to the Anoka
County Engineer on May 14, 2009. No response has been received by staff at the time of this
writing. Anoka County Highway department has been contacted and a response is anticipated to
be available at the time of the meeting.
Recommendation:
Based upon discussion.
Action:
Based upon County response.
Reviewed By: .~
Director of Public Works/Principal City Engineer
City Engineer
Public Works Street Supervisor
Chief of Police
PW: 05/18/10
