C
I
The publicly owned airports at Flying Cloud, Crystal, Anoka
1 County, Airlake Industrial (acquired by MAC - 1981), Lake
Elmo, South St. Paul, St. Paul Downtown, and Minneapolis -St.
Paul International accomodate over 90% of all based aircraft
1 and aircraft operations within the metro region. The
remainder are served by the privately owned fields at
Gateway North, Forest Lake, Benson, and Northport.
1
3.4 Gateway North's Role
3.4.1 Metropolitan Airport System Plan
1
Figure 3 -1 illustrates the current metropolitan
airport system. Gateway North is a designated
minor airport in the system plan. Table 3 -1
1
illustrates the type of facility capabilities
associated with the four airport classifications
in the metropolitan system. The designation as a
minor airport in the metropolitan system is
1
equivalent to a basic or general utility airport
within the National Plan of Integrated Airports
1
System.
The current metropolitan system plan acknowledges
the role of the privately owned airports within
1
the region and assumes the continued operation of
Gateway North as well as Forest Lake, Northport
and Benson Airport. As private facilities,
however, no future publicly funded improvements
1
have been planned at the regional level.
Based aircraft currently at Gateway are registered
1
to pilots in the communities of Anoka, Ramsey,
Wyoming, Champlin, Zimmerman, and Elk River
(Figure 3 -2).
1
3.4.2 State Aviation System Plan
(SASP)
1
The State Aviation System Plan addresses publicly
owned airport facilities. State assistance is
provided on a limited basis at privately owned
public use airports primarily for visual naviga-
1
tional aids, lighting or planning purposes.
Gateway North Industrial is not currently in the
SASP due to its private ownership. Mn /DOT,
however, has participated in a temporary airport
1
lighting system and planning projects.
1
1
3 -3
1
