I
Commissioner Greenberg suggested that the cities of Princeton,
' Lakeville and Lake Elmo be contacted and find out if their airports
have been a drain or asset to their communities.
' Brenda Bauerkemper - Thought that would have been done by the
Commission already; cities are very cooperative and all you have to
do is contact them.
' Merland Otto stated that generally what you find with aiports of
this size is that they are not self- sufficient. You have to look
at all things being equal between Ramsey and another city in terms
' of business opportunities, tax breaks, etc. Given two cities,
one with an airport and one without, the city with the airport is
going to get the nod.
'
Gretta Egge - 15601 Nutria
- The present economy in Minnesota is
driving big business away.
What makes you think an upgraded airport
will bring businesses
into
Ramsey?
'
Chairman Ippel replied
that
he doesn't think there will ever be
big businesses like 3M
and
Honeywell in Ramsey; development will be
'
the type you see here
now.
Gretta Egge - How many
businesses
have located in Ramsey in the last
five years?
'
Chairman Ippel replied
with
Altron and Water Control; you are talking,
about small businesses
that
have started and expanded.
Sharon Mager - When the Commission makes it recommendation to Council,
how much weight will you give to economic considerations versus
' residential considerations?
Commissioner Greenberg replied that this is the reason for the
' Airport Master Plan; to study ,all aspects and conduct 4 public
-meetings.
Sharon Mager - If every public meeting shows that the people are
against upgrading the airport and if the study shows that economically,
an airport would be good for the City, what way will this Commission
go?
'
Chairman Ippel stated that he can't answer that question now; he
is a resident of Ramsey first and he will do what he feels is right
for Ramsey. What we are doing now is gathering information; we
will look at every avenue. If the airport were there and sewer and
water was brought in, it wouldn't cost as much because you would not
need the capacity you would need if that area were heavy residential.
1 Commissioner Donovan stated that some good questions have been
raised and it may sound as though the Commission does not have the
' answers and we don't. We are here to gather information.
Commissioner Donovan stated that he heard that some of the citizens
in the audience left the meeting because they think the Commission
' has already arrived at a decision to go ahead with the airport.
The Commission has j"st started the process of studying the issue
and have made no decisions. The citizens were not involved 5 months
' AP /May 16, 1984
Public Meeting
