4.4 Aviation Related Business Survey <br />A survey of local businesses was made from an area including <br />the Cities of Anoka, Ramsey and Elk River. The Anoka and <br />Elk River Chamber of Commerce were helpful in supplying <br />names of area businesses and attempting to identify those <br />directly related to aviation. The Chambers of each area <br />furnished a letter of support signed by the Chambers' presi- <br />dents that accompanied the business survey form. <br />The business form was comprised of five (5) sections, General <br />Information, Aircraft Data, Gateway North Proposed Improve- <br />ments, Charter Service, and Comments. <br />In the first section, General Information consisted of name, <br />address and description of firm surveyed. <br />The second section asked for Aircraft Data, if the firm <br />owns or leases an aircraft, description of aircraft used, <br />home base and if the firm has used Gateway North. <br />The third section questions the firms on the need for <br />Gateway North improvements and preference for improvements. <br />The fourth section questions the firms about the use of <br />Charter Service. These questions were asked to determine <br />the potential need for charter and air taxi services if <br />the facilities are improved. <br />The Comments section and question 26 enabled firms to <br />express their opinion on the proposed improvement. Question <br />26 asked if the proposed facilities would have an economic <br />impact on the area. Question 27 asked for additional <br />comments on the proposal. <br />There were 86 respondents out of approximately 300 busi- <br />nesses surveyed. The majority of the businesses (87%) were <br />either home offices and/or locally owned. The business <br />activities of the respondents varied greatly with largest <br />groups in manufacturing, real estate, professional services <br />and retail trade. Of those surveyed, 22 replied that <br />members of company were pilots. Seven companies owned air- <br />craft and 24 leased aircraft. <br />Only one company owned aircraft is currently based at <br />Gateway North and if improvements were made two additional <br />single engine aircraft owners stated they would base at the <br />airport. <br />4-5 <br />1 <br />
