CASE # 1
.Storm Water Management Education & Outreach
By: Chris Anderson, Environmental Coordinator
Background:
Managing and effectively utilizing storm water has become a hot topic and one of great
importance. Previous management practices focused on directing storm water into a pipe and
away from developed azeas as fast as possible. As the Boazd knows though, storm water is now
often viewed as a valuable resource rather than a nuisance and as such, there is more of a desire
to capture and reuse storm water and to promote infiltration of storm water rather than moving it
off site. The Board recognized the importance of better utilization and management of storm
water while developing their 2010 work plan and included storm water management education
and outreach.
Observations:
There aze many different strategies for managing and utilizing storm water available for
homeowners and businesses. These can include the use of rain .barrels, the installation of rain
gardens, better site design, and pervious pavements to name of few. The challenge facing the
Boazd is to identify the strategies that homeowners and businesses are most likely to consider
implementing and how best to educate them about those options.
While information can be developed for the website, what other options or tools might work as
well? Some possibilities could include: Partnering with the Anoka Conservation District to offer
free workshops on topics such as water smart landscaping and rain gardens; continuing to look
for opportunities to participate/sponsor events that offer products such as rain barrels; and
promoting collaborative neighborhood projects.
Recommendation:
The purpose of this case is really to brainstorm possible options/ideas regarding storm water
management education and outreach. The Board should be prepazed to discuss various options
for. storm water education and outreach and consider when and how they can/should be
implemented. -
EPB Action:
Based on discussion.
EPB: 6/7/10
