CASE # 2
Review 2010 Arbor Day Event
By: Chris Anderson, Environmental Coordinator
Background:
As the Board knows, the City observed Arbor Day this year on May 22 and in recognition of
Arbor Day, roughly 200 seedlings were planted in Forest Hideaway Park and ten (10) fruit trees
were planted at the community garden site. Unfortunately, inclement weather brought an end to
the planting activities before the installation of all the planting materials at the community garden
site were completed.
The following week,-some of the Board members inquired whether there was a plan to complete
the planting work that was unfinished. Thanks to the dedication of Board Member Bentz, the
remaining seedlings were planted. However, there are still plant materials, specifically
raspbemes and strawbemes, which have not yet been installed at the community garden site (to
complete these plantings, sod still needs to be removed and wood chip mulch needs to be
installed).
Staff believes that using seedlings for the planting event seemed to get everyone much more
involved right from the start of the day. But, Staff would also like to get feedback from the
Board about this year's planting event, especially their opinions about planting seedlings vs.
larger trees. Furthermore; based on the inquiries received after the event; Staff wanted to gauge
the interest level of the Board in its involvement with completing the plantings at the community
garden site.
Recommendation:
The Board should be prepared to review the Arbor Day planting event and to discuss what level,
if any, of involvement'the Board may have in the completion of the edible landscapes project at
the community garden site.
EPB Action:
Based on discussion.
EPB: 6/7!10
