3) Furniture Purchases for the Ramsey Municipal Center
Management Intern Hendricks stated that staff has been working with Parameters, Inc. to select
furniture for the new conference room and also requested information regarding other furniture
needs. The other items include 15 training tables, 30 stacking chairs and two tack boards for the
Lake Itasca Room, one tack board for the Planning Department as well as a literature rack, plus
an end table for the City Administrator's office. Staff would also like to purchase a credenza for
the COR room. Three furniture companies were contacted for quotes. Ms. Hendricks presented
a spreadsheet with the quotes. She stated that staff is recommending the tables, tack boards,
literature rack and end table be purchased from Parameters and the chairs from Interium. She
recommended the credenza be purchased from Interium.
Discussion ensued relating to the prices of the tables and chairs.
Consensus of the Council was to look at the used market for the chairs but to purchase
everything else as recommended by staff.
Ms. Hendricks reported this item would be on the next Council consent agenda.
4) Increasing Ridership on the Ramsey Star Express
Management Intern Hendricks stated that Council has discussed increasing the ridership on the
Ramsey Star Express. Staff has prepared a satisfaction survey for the riders and has created an
ad aimed at increasing the numbers as well. She presented the draft ad and stated it would be
placed in local papers. She asked for approval or comments on the survey and the selection of
the papers to place the ad in. She presented the pricing as well as funding sources.
Councilmember Look stated he likes the idea- we should not have to be running this project but
it is as it is.
Councilmember McGlone asked how many riders it will take to offset the $3,200. He wondered
what is wrong with our own newsletter - doing a full page in there. He expressed concern about
putting ads in the papers and thought we should try some more cost effective means -such as
utility billings.
Councilmember Look suggested taking advantage of the free first and increase it whenever
possible. We aze putting in a lot of money on this every month.
Councilmember Elvig stated he agrees the last thing you cut is advertising but you have to be
sensitive to our neighbors to the north -such as was suggested by Mr. Ulrich. We need to strike
that balance and get as much ridership as we can.
Councilmember McGlone asked what aze we spending amonth -about $50,000?
Director of Public Works Olson stated that $13,000 is coming in on the fare box.
City Council Work Session -June 1, 2010
