CASE#
MNDOT RESPONSE TO SIGN REQUEST AT 16261 ST FRANCIS BLVD ACCESS
By: Steven Jankowski, Assistant City Engineer
Background:
Staff brought attention to a concern regarding the visibility of a private driveway access onto TH
47 at the March. 16, 2010 Public Works Committee meeting. The property is located at 16261 St
Francis Blvd. Attached to this case are two aerial photos illustrating the area; one showing the
general area and the second a closer view of the driveway area. Also attached are photos of the
northbound approach to this driveway.
It had been suggested that the driveway.could be rerouted to the stub of Lithium Street.
However, this would involve the cooperation of both the property owner at 16261 St Francis
Blvd and the owner of the parcel to the north. The subject parcel has legal access to TH 47, and a
relocation of the driveway couldn't be required of the property owner.
Staff was directed to. contact MnDot to inquire as to whether they would consider placement of
warning signs such as "Hidden Driveway" (or some similar warning) along TH 47. Attached is
the MnDot response to this request from Tiffany Dragon of the MnDot Metro Signing and
Pavement Marking Division. Ms. Dragon's response acknowledges that the sight distance is
limited and recommends that the property trimming vegetation on his property would mitigate
the problem to some extent. MnDot also responded that they would not be installing a sign as
they have determined that such signs do not improve safety.
Recommendation:
Based upon discussion:
Action:
Based upon discussion:
Reviewed By:
Director of Public Works/Principal City Engineer
City Engineer
Public Works Street Supervisor
Chief of Police
PW: 09121/10
