PC CASE# 7 <br /> <br />ACCEPT RESIGNATION OF CRIME PREVENTION SPECIALIST INTERN AND <br />AUTHORIZE HIRING OF CRIME PREVENTION SPECIALIST INTERN <br /> Heidi Nelson, Assistant City Administrator <br /> <br />Background: <br /> <br />On J'anumy 22''a, 2002, the Council authorized staff to h/re a Crkne Prevention Specialist Intern <br />for the Police Department. The position was posted at various locations on the Internet where <br />interns or job seekers interested in Crime Prevention may search. Four letters of interest were <br />received and a panel consisting of the Crime Prevention Specialist, Fire Inspector, Patrol <br />Corporal, and Assistant City Administrator interviewed two applicants. The panel did not <br />recommend hiring either of the applicants interviewed, therefore an' ad was placed in the Star <br />Tribune to recruit a larger pool of applicants. Twenty-nine letters of interest were received; <br />eleven of which were interviewed by the same panel described above on. April 4th and 5th, 2002. <br />Based on the panel's recommendation, staff recommended hiring Brenda Cooper for the Crime <br />Prevention Specialist internship at the April 23rd, 2002 Council Meeting. Shortly after beginning <br />work with the PD, Ms. Cooper subm/tted her resignation due to family medical issues. Staff <br />reviewed the other candidates that were inte~Mewed on April 4th and 5th and contacted the next <br />highest-ranking candidate fi'om the interview process, Jennifer Furan. Ms. Furan was still <br />interested in the internship opportunity, therefore the position was offered to her, <br /> <br />Staff Recommendation: <br /> <br />Staff is recommending that the Council ratify the h/ring of Jennifer Furan as the Crime Prevention <br />Specialist at a wage of $10.00 per hour for an initial period of not to exceed slx months <br />contingent upon successful completion drug/alcohol screening. As a part-time temporary <br />position, Ms. Furan will not be eligible for vacation time, sick leave, hohday pay, or health and life <br />insurance. <br /> <br />Committee Action: <br /> <br />Motion to recommend that the City Council ratify hiring of Jennifer Furan as the Crime <br />Prevention Specialist Intern at a wage of $10.00 per hour for an initial period not to exceed slx <br />months contingent upon successful completion drag/alcohol screening. <br /> <br />Reviewed by: <br />City Administrator <br />Assistant City Administrator <br />Chief of Police <br /> <br />PC: 05/14/02 <br /> <br />-301- <br /> <br /> <br />
