Anoka County Union Page 3 of 5

6:18 p.m. The radio lets out a wail, informing all on duty there has been a car
accident.

Unit 5U55 (that's Johnson) responds. Although Johnson knows she will not be
writing up the accident, she will be there to assist the 'officer by directing
traffic around the scene.

One of her biggest challenges has been to learn the roadways of the city. Some
days when she is off duty, she explores the city, learning short cuts and
frequently traveled byways.

"It's important to know them to be able to cai1 in your location (without
having to look it up)," she said.

6:25 p.m. Johnson arrives at the accident scene. A fender-bender. A rear-end
hit at a stop light on Highway 47.

6:26 p.m. Johnson gets back on the road. There was no need for traffic control
because the accident occurred in the fight-mm lane.

If it had happened in the intersection, she would have directed traffic and,
possibly, swept some of the debris from the roadway, Johnson said.

As a member of the police reserve, Johnson is required to do two patrols a
month, although she sometimes volunteers for more.

Both new reserve recruits and the PSA members-in-training patrol with a full-
time officer twice a year, said Johnson.

"The most important part of the ride-along with the officer is to develop trust
between the units," she said.

6:43 p.m. The second agenda packet is delivered to the home of new
Councilmember Patti Kurak.

6:58 p.m. Another packet has been delivered - to Councilmember Terry
Hendriksen - the only council member who will be at home tonight.

7:14 p.m. Johnson patrols Central Park. The park is busy tonight with hockey
players and other ice enthusiasts.

The parks are patrolled to have a presence and to be on the lookout for trouble,
said Johnson.

Following the drive through the park, it is off to Highway I 0 and Wayside
Park. Along the way, Johnson will be looking for stalled cars on the highway.

In addition to checking the parks, before and after closing time, Johnson will
also be checking the doors of area businesses at various times to make sure
they are locked.

If the doors are unlocked, an officer will be called to assist because it could be
a burglary in progress, she said.

_8.http://www. ecm-inc, com/news/anokaJ2001/February/Si ohnson.html 02/13/2001
