I

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I'
I
I
I
I

My communications background includes writing on technology, science and policy issues for
publications such as The New York Times Magazine and Newsweek. I have also appeared as a
guest analyst on radio and television.

My major reason for applying for the commission is to serve my community by bringing my
knowledge to planning and development issues. As I noted in my Bush Leadership a/pplication,
this grows from the history of my family. From my parents and my grandparents, I learned that
we can and should make a difference. They taught me a rule I preached while guiding in the
BWCA: one should leave a place better than one found k. My grandfather was a German leader
who actively opposed AdoffHitler. Sentenced to death, he escaped and worked for the League
of Nations and the AFL. After the war, he returned to Germany to help rebuild the country.
When he died in 1973, a million people lined the streets of Hamburg to watch his funeral
procession. My mother was one of the few women in her generation who became a doctor.
During her spare time she tutored children with learning disabilities. My father, also a physician,
pioneered various surgical techniques, including working with a Nobel Prize winner.

My vision for the city favors rational, equitable, and mukiple-use development that provides for
innovative residential, retail, and recreational opportunities. I have a particular interest in
enhancing technology info structure, both for residents and business. By doing this we can attract
companies and employees who will enhance the envkonment of the city. I also would like to
apply my system dynamics modeling knowledge to city development.

I look forward to discussing my application further with you, city staff, and the city council. You
can reach me at 763-576-8317 or 763-576-8143.

Sincerely,

Ralph Brauer

-165-
