While the City will definitely benefit from the skills and talents of an
intern, the City can also provide an intern with real world experience more suited to their career
objectives. This individual will also receive opportunities for mentodng, networking, and
basically, establishing a foundation for their career objectives. Based on the City's experience
from last year's internship program, staff budgeted approximately $6,000 in the 2001 budget to
accommodate the expense of wages for an intern. This amount was not increased from last
year's budgeted amount. Staff interviewed Christopher J. Kietblock for the intern position. If
Mr. Kielblock is approved for this position, he is available immediately and can work with the
City until the second week of August, at which time he needs to return to school.

Motion by Councilmember Anderson, seconded by Councilmember Kurak, to authorize the
hiring of Mr. Kielblock for Community Development three-month intern position.

Motion carried. Voting Yes: Mayor Gamec, Councilmembers Anderson, Kurak, HendtSksen,
and Zimmerman. Voting No: None.

2) Accept Resignation of Public Works Secretary

City Administrator Norman stated that on May 18, 200 i, Tara Olson, Public Works Secretary,
submitted her letter of resignation to accept a position with the City of St. Louis Park. On
October 10, 2000, the City Council approved additional language for the Personnel Policy
(Section 3.20.035, Recruitment and Selection) that allows administrative staff to post a job
opening when a position is vacated and then btSng the information to the City Council at the next
scheduled meeting. Staff posted the vacancy internally on May 21, 2001, in accordance with the
union contract.

Motion by Councilmember Anderson, seconded by Councilmember Kurak, to accept the
resignation of Public Works Secretary Tara Olson and authorize staff to continue the hiring
process to find a replacement full-time Public Works Secretary.

Motion carried.
