" <br /> <br /> City Administrator Norman stated that staff is strongly opposed to televising 'interviews and <br /> including only two Councilmembers the need to televise the intervzews :Would not be an issue. <br /> <br /> Councilmember Kurak stated that she ageed that the interviewS',should not'be televised. She felt <br /> that the interviews should be advertised as an open meeting, .bu~ should ~not be televised. <br /> <br /> Councilmember Hendriksen stated that he does n6{?-t~ink ,they have: had:any problems with <br /> interviewing in the past and being interviewed on television',iS notking compared to sitting in <br /> front of a bunch of angry residents, if an applicant can't handle "the heat" of being interviewed <br /> he did not think the applicant would be able to handle the job well. He felt that televising the <br /> interviews would be a good test on how they will handle other stressful .situations:. ~ <br /> <br /> Councilmember Kurak stated that they as a' COUncil have to be careful of what they do and the <br /> City did come very close to having a lawsuit during the last planning Commission interview. As <br /> a whole they have to be very careful, which has nothing toro ..W/th the applicant. <br /> <br /> City Administrator Norman stated that regardless ~fhow the.applicant feels, the burden is on the <br /> Council. He did not think the Council was ready:to take on those types of policies. <br /> <br /> Councilmember Zimmerman stated that he ',feels that the public has the right to view the <br /> applicants because sometimes a resume can be very.good and the interview may not be well at <br /> <br />Councilmember Kurak stated that there i~ nothing from preventing any resident from attending <br />the interviews, because they would be advertised as an open meeting. She stated that she is <br />'~ firmly against placing interviews on television for the protection of the City, <br /> <br /> Councilmember Hendriksen stated that when applicants are interviewed the meeting will be <br /> recorded by a secretary and if' they ask inappropriate questions the City would be liable either <br /> waY. <br /> <br /> Councilmember Kurak replied that meeting minutes don't reflect exactly what happens. <br /> <br /> Councilmember Hendriksen stated that he could take the other wew that he would like to have <br /> everything on television so that the CiW could protect themselves in a situation where something <br /> was.be!ng claimed and they needed to defend themselves against a lawsuit. <br /> <br />Personnel Committee/August 28, 2001 <br /> Page 4 of 6 <br /> <br />committee be made up of the,-entire <br /> <br /> <br />
