Epilepsy; Metal Retardation and other related conditions. <br /> <br />Arc is a nationwide disability rights organization with the major <br />focus at the local or grassroots level. There are approximately <br />1600 local chapters generally organized by county. The Arc Anoka <br />and Arc Ramsey Boards voted to pursue a merger of the two <br />agencies. After further study and communication with members, <br />the Boards and members approved a merger February 27, 1995. <br />After a similar process the Boards and members voted to merge Arc <br />Suburban into the Arc of Anoka and Ramsey Counties effective <br />J~.nuary 1, 2000. A key component of the merger agreement was to <br />~]a~.ntain offices in each county or area and continue to provide <br />,~ality services for me~ers in each community° <br /> <br /> provides ~ variety of services for people in Ramsey and Anoka <br />~unties incli, ading: <br /> <br />F~. ~ily Services - The goal of this ~rogram is ~© empower parents <br />ei~d guardia~~- by providing them wit~. opportunities to network <br />w~h other p rents to reduce feelir~gs of stres~--~ and isolation, <br />and to gair~ ~kills and ~nformation needed to ~rent their child <br />w~th a disab~!ity. Thi~' is'accomplished through: support groups; <br />P~!ot Paren~ ~.etwork lf~-~[zing parents "who have been there with <br />.... rents experiencing crf~is or emotional stress; informa~ion and <br />r~ ferral; i..~3ividual c~nsultation; individual ~dvocacy an~ <br />~3nflict re. 31ution. <br /> <br />· ~nunity Awareness an~ Planning - The goal of this program is to <br />~i~crease the awareness ~f community members regarding <br />~isabilities and the lives of people with disabilities and to <br />i~elp communities welcome and include people with disabilities and <br />)~revent discrimination. Services include: consultation with <br />~chools and other community agencies on including people with <br />developmental disabilities; presentations to school children and <br />community groups on developmental disabilities; membership on <br />local and state advisory and planning committees to insure <br />policies are supportive of families and people with disabilities; <br />public awareness events; volunteer speaker's bureau; monitoring <br />public policy. <br /> <br />Toy and Adaptive Equipment Lending Library - The library, <br />located in the Blaine office, is for children birth through age <br />seven. This unique library includes a variety of toys designed <br />to stimulate child development, adaptive equipment and other <br />resources available to the general public and families who have <br />children with disabilities. The goals for this program are: 1. <br />Through the use of toys and equipment, children will learn new <br />strategies or skills to help them increase motor, <br />speech/language, and cognitive development; and 2. Families will <br />increase their knowledge of adaptive equipment designed to <br />increase child development. <br /> <br /> <br />
