t
I
I
I
I
I
i

I
I
I

Misc.

As in prior years, Assistant Fire Chief Tom Hoxter and myself completed an end of the year
interview with the individual firefighters. Although the responses are considered confidential,
general responses are listed below.

This years questions: 1) What are your thoughts on the 1999 training?
2) Any concerns on station #2
3) What are your thoughts on the current structure at RFD? Officers structure?
Probationary Structure?
4) What in our FD is in the most need of change? Least?
5) Is monthly communication enough within the FD?
6) Have you been treated unfairly by anyone in this FD in 19997

Never too much, Day training has more hands on (good thing), well organized, Ron does
great job. Training is good, like to see more auto extrication, Medical training good,
training well organized. Ron does fine job, like hands on training. Could use more hands
on training. Live burn was handled great, more medical hands on (scenarios). Training
good, maybe an optional training session per month.. Liked it all, good mix. Great, well
organized, as dept we learn a lot. Good, nothing trained on too much. Sometimes
monotonous, Savanna Oaks tour was good, maybe more emphasis on maintenance of
equipment. Well organized. On right track well organized. Well organized although
medical training seems tough on some FF's. Ron does good job, more auto extrication.
Good, Ron does good job. Excellent, Ron does good job, training boards are great.
Training was fair, fairly well organized, good mix of topics throughout year. Training good,
Ron good Training Officer, Defensive Driving was not real good, Like Denny N as an
instructor. Training fair, Too much medical, need more patient packaging practice. Maybe
work with Police during year, maybe alternative training. Training good, likes when we
break into small groups.

#2)

Any new personnel? New Officers for new station? Concerned about City Council moving
into building. Concerned with joint use (CC). Splitting a good group into 2. Not happening
soon enough. Concern about CC in station. Timeline too long. Can't wait until it's finished
it has taken too long. Long frustrating process. Careful we don't become 2 depts. Keep
dept well informed on progress. Dual station response vs. single. Which station am I
responding to. New Officers positions, responsibilities. Wish it was already done.

#3)

Officers work together well, structure not so strict that everyone will listen, Probationary
structure works well. Likes current structure. Concerned that entire officers group not
comfortable at the lC position. Probationary system works well. Officers do good job.
Officers group seems to run pretty smooth, probationary system is good. Everything
seems fine. Probation system is good. Probationary people need more direction at times.
Do we need 3 officers going to most scenes? Push some Officers responsibilities down to
FF's. At live burns, who decides which people can/can't participate? Captain #11
overworked, rest of group doing ok. Concerned about non-officers telling red-dots to get
in trucks before 3rd truck. Officers group does well, probationary structure is one of our
strong points. Works well, Probationary structure is easy to understand by new FF's. OK
and OK. New officers positions for Station #2 will be interesting, probationary issues are
handled ok. Should all officers carry turnout gear to facilitate a better sizeup at scenes?
