Memo

To".

From:

CC:

Date:

Re:

Jim Norman, City Administrator

Megan Wald, Community Development Assistant

City Council Members

04/10/01

Community Calendar Project

The City of Ramsey receives a grant from Anoka County Integrated Waste each year
to help fund the City's residential recycling program. I would like to use money from
the 2001-recycling budget to fund a community/recycling awareness calendar.

I am interested in putting together a calendar that would mainly focus on waste
reduction, recycling, composting and different community events that the City puts on
during a calendar year. The calendar would include pictures from Recycling Days,
Arbor Day, Happy Days, etc. Since I am proposing to fund the project through the
recycling budget I would have to follow Anoka County Integrated Waste's guidelines
which are: 1) Calendar must be printed two sided with soy ink and a minimum of 10%
post consumer paper 2) Calendar content must be at a minimum 90% waste
reduction, toxicity reduction, recycling, or composting 3) Most pictures and graphics
must relate to the environment.

I was thinking of asking either the 1st or 2nd graderS at Ramsey Elementary School to
have a coloring contest of a picture related to recycling. The winning, picture would
then be included in the calendar.

Many surrounding Cities have put together a community calendar with a main focus
on recycling and tips on bettering the environment. On an average the calendars
would run approximately $1 each plus applicable postage cost. I would like to
allocate enough money so that each Ramsey Resident would receive a calendar in
the mail, this would be approximately 10, 000 dollars (includes cost of calendar and
postage). There is money in the recycling budget to cover the calendar and
postage costs for each Ramsey resident.
