I
I
I

PC CASE

AUTHORIZE THE HIRING OF A
TEMPORARY COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT INTERN AND
ADOPT A RESOLUTION TO AMEND THE 2000 BUDGET
Rhonda Hcryla, Human Resources Manager

Background:
Because of the City's continuing growth, the Community Development Department is also experiencing a
growth in the demand for their services. With the increasing number of projects that need their immediate
attention, as well as the day to day assignments, staff is requesting that the City Council authorize the hiring
of an intern for the summer months. Summer is typically recognized as a time when the demands for service
from the Community Development Department is at its greatest.

Observations:
In addition to having an intern to provide research and general zoning and land use information, the
Community Development Department also needs to have assistance with code enforcement, sign
enforcement, building activity reports, cemetery file updates, property address updates, comprehensive plan
files cataloguing, ordinance research and development, special projects assistance (i.e., Hwy #10 corridor
study) and City Code Zoning Chapter updates. While the City will definitely benefit from the skills and
talents of an intern, the City can also provide a student intern with hands-on experience more suited to their

i career objectives. This individual will also receive opportunities for mentoring, networking, and basically,
---est~ablishing a found ati on-for4hei-r-c-areer-obj ¢¢h¥~s ...........

The estimated cost for an intern is $6,500 and could be taken from the Engineering Cost Center 301. In
discussing the possibility of using available funds, the Finance Officer advised staff that the City had
budgeted for the hiring of an additional engineer in the 2000 Budget. She indicated that since the engineer
will not be starting with the City until May 30th, there are excess funds from this line item that could be used
to pay for an intern with the Community Development Department.

Staff Recommendation:
Recommend to the City Council to authorize staff to hire an intern for Community Development for the
summer and adopt the attached resolution to transfer $6,500 from the General Fund budget of Engineering
personal services to the budget of Planning and Zoning personal services.

Committee Action:
Recommend that the City Council authorize staff to hire an intern for Community Development for the
summer and adopt the attached resolution to transfer $6,500 from the General Fund budget of Engineering
personal services to the budget of Planning and Zoning personal services.

Reviewed by:
City Administrator
Assistant City Administrator
Community Development Director
Finance Officer

i PC:
05/23/00
