I
I
I
I
I
I
I

I
I
I
I

I
I

I

CASE #
AWARD BIDS FOR IMPROVEMENT PROJECT #99-11 AND #99-12 THE
BITUMINOUS PAVING OF JACKEL AND IQUANA STREETS
By: Steven Jankowski, City Engineer

Background:

The City Council ordered these two projects on May 23, 2000. These projects involve grading,
and paving of Jackel Street (IP #99-11) and Iguana Street (IP #99-12) between 153rd Avenue and
151st Lane. Bids were received from seven contractors on Tuesday, June 20, 2000, with the
following results:

Contractor
DMJ Corporation
North Valley Inc.
W.B. Miller, Inc.
Northwest Asphalt, Inc.
Bauerly Companies
Hardrivers, Inc.
Forest Lake Contracting, Inc.

Base Bid Amount
$5O,329.50
$5O,88O.OO
$55,051.00
$55,825.00
$59,547.50
$70,652.50
$72,051.00

Alternate Bid
$46,764.4O
$46,280.00
$49,876.00
$52,105.00
$54,972.50
$65,462.50
$66,950.00

The feasibility study prepared in February 2000, estimated the construction cost to be $49,390
which can be compared to the alternate bid. Attached is a petition from 100% of the benefited
parties associated with Jackel Street (IP #99-11) requesting that the project increase the
bituminous thickness from two inches to three inches. This petition was received June 2, 2000,
and the specification's were modified such that the base bid included the extra thickness of
bituminous requested by the resident. I have sent out the attached letter to all of the residents
advising them of the increased cost and informing them that my recommendation would be to
award the bid for the thicker bituminous and consequent higher cost in accordance with their
petition.

Recommendation:

Attached is the bid tabulation and recommendation from the consulting engineer to award the
project to the low responsible bidder. It is furthermore recommended by staff that the alternate
bid be awarded to DMJ Corporation in the amount of $50,329.50.

Council Action:

Motion to adopt Resolution #00-06-XXX Awarding bid to DMJ Corporation for Improvement
Project//99-11 and//99-12 in the amount of $50,329.50.

Reviewed by:

City Engineer
City Administrator
Director of Public Works
City Attorney

CC: 06/27/00

177

/&
