particular tank which is less than one quarter of one percentage over the October 15, 2001
completion date, The steel fluted tank was selected over the composite tank for several reasons.
First, the steel tanks have a well established track record. With proper coating maintenance a
steel tank can last nearly indefinitely. There are many steel tanks, which are over 100 years old.
The composite tank however, has a masonry concrete base and has been widespread use for only
10 - 15 years and mostly in the south which is less subject to freeze/thaw cycles. A second
concern with the masonry base is the high maintenance cost of sandblasting if it becomes the
target of graffiti. Graffiti can be washed off a painted steel tank comparatively easily with a
chemical solvent. Finally one of the ancillary benefits of either water tank is the storage
available within the base of the tank. However, the steel tank has a radius of 25 ft. which is six
feet longer than the composite giving the steel tank nearly 30% more storage area inside its base
than the composite tank.

Council Action:

Motion to:

Adopt Resolution awarding the contract for Water Tower No. 2 to PDM in the amount of
$1,445,000,00

Review by:

City Administrator
Director of Public Works
Parks & Utilities Supervisor

CC:

06/27/00

182

I
I
I
!
I
I
I
I
I
I
!

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
