This event is helpful to residents that have to get rid of unusual items. It is helpful to the
City because these items sometimes cause blight or nuisances on residential properties, or
sometimes are illegally dumped. It is also helpful to the region because these materials
are reused/recycled instead of finding their way into landfills.

The City of Ramsey Recycling Program also includes curbside pick-up of aluminum
cans, newspaper and various plastic products. As of April 30, 2000, Ramsey Residents
had recycled 452 tons of material through the residential curbside recycling program.

The City of Ramsey's ultimate goat is to keep 1,582 tons (175 pounds per person) of
recyclable materials from entering solid waste landfills.
Report submitted by Megan ~ald, Commum?y Development Assistant

Tree Sale and Environmental Expo:

The 25th annual City Tree Sale was held on the Ramsey Elementary School campus from
7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., in conjunction with the Environmental Expo. Seven nurseries
provided materials for sale as well as Jenny Penfield and TroOp 362.

Each nursery donated a tree for the school grounds and one for the City Hall campus. In
addition, three nurseries in the City that did not participate in the sale still donated a tree
for City Hall.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources donated 1,400 white spruce, Norway
pine, red oak and black walnut seedlings for an Arbor Day gift for attendees. Citizen
volunteers like SueEllen Dickhausen and her scout troop, Tara Sorg, Jessica Davis and
Councilmember Gerald Zimmerman helped distribute the seedlings bagged in compost
for the trip home.

With regard to the Environmental Expo, the following were exhibitors/demonstrations:

Raptor Center
Science Museum of Minnesota
Geological Society Minnesota
Mike Mather, Northern Arborists (Stillwater) - rope tree climbing demonstration
Carl Vogt - portable band sawmill demonstration
Kunde Co. - cable plow
Connexus Energy installed posts and banner and sponsored "Animals of Waltons
Hollow - Petting Zoo"
· Lyle Bradley- nature walk
· Bluebird Recovery Project
· Herpetological Society
Ramsey Park and Recreation Commission
· Wargo Nature Center- Prairie Creatures
Clean WaterAlIiance
· Anoka Conservation District

[lR,4_F$1iI/OLlluser.~lCily Shared FileMGENDA COUNCIL & COMMIS$1ON~City Council~2OOO~JulyiRepo~SpringEve~ts. doc
07/03/00

I
I

I
I
I
I
I
I
I

1
I
I

I
I'
I
I
