CONSTRUCTION OF SIDEWALK ON SUNV~OOD DR BET~rEEN NOWTHEN BLVD
I AND HVVY 47
By: Dean Kapler, Director of Public Works

I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

Background:

At the June 27, 2000 Council meeting staff was directed to meet with the neighborhood along
Sunwood Dr to discuss issues involving construction of sidewalks on both sides of Sunwood Dr
between Nowthen Blvd and Hwy 47.

On July 6, 2000 at 5:30pm a meeting took place at Erkium St and Sunwood Dr. With one
exception, all households immediately adjacent to Sunwood Dr. were represented. Residents
presented staff with a proposal for four-foot wide sidewalks on both sides of the street next to the
curb. After lengthy discussion including issues of snow storage/removal, Boulevard trees,
landscaping and safety issues, three households of the group wanted to stay with the original
proposal with the sidewalk next to the curb. Staff brought assorted widths of plywood to use in
discussions of preferred widths of concrete along with pictures illustrating different widths of
both sidewalks and boulevard.

At the conclusion of the meeting a consensus was reached that a concrete sidewalk on both sides
of the street be constructed including a boulevard of 3-5 feet (width of boulevard to be
determined by working with homeowners individually). Staff also committed to the homeowners
that all attempts would be made to assure that relocation/replacement of landscaping would be
done to their satisfaction.

Details of the meeting are attached.

Recommendation:

Staff recommends the construction of a concrete sidewalk with a 3-5 ft boulevard on both sides of
Sunwood Dr. Plantings to include trees in both the boulevard and the yard side of the right-of-
way. Staff will work with residents in determining the boulevard setback (3-5 feet),
relocation/replacement of landscaping and irrigation issues. Funding will include the Hwy 47
project and MSA funds. (Additional funding information will be available at CC meeting)

Council Action:

Motion to approve/disapprove staff's recommendation of the construction of sidewalks along
Sunwood Dr.

Reviewed by:
City Administrator
Director of Public Works
City Engineer

CC: 7/11/00

1

I
