Mayor Ramsey stated that his whole thought process behind this is — it's no different than if you
work on a construction job you need steel -toed boots — the employee buys them and gets
reimbursed.
Councilmember Elvig stated he is not real passionate one way or another. He did not see it as
that big of a tool. He uses his just like a word processor to see his agenda.
Mayor Ramsey talked about being able to multi -task better.
Councilmember Jeffrey stated we have come a long way — and now some of us cannot live
without our computers. He feels it's a great idea and great to set expectations for the
Councilmembers coming in.
Councilmember Dehen stated he is looking at it from a cost perspective. He does not feel a part-
time Councilmember needs to have a top of the line computer at the City's expense. What's
being done now is working fine for him and he is concerned about this cost to the City.
Mayor Ramsey stated that we would not necessarily be spending more money — it just allows for
more flexibility.
Councilmember McGlone stated that with the issue of cost - we were going to be saving $7,000 a
year on paper and the computers will cost about $4,000. The computers will depreciate down to
zero — so turning it in at the end of the term- it will have zero value anyway. He felt that the
computer is not a big thing and it's not too much to ask for the ability to be on line.
Councilmember Look felt that $1,000 is a bit high on a computer. He thought he paid $399 or
$450 for his. Maybe the threshold should be placed at $500 but you could get by with a cheaper
one. We do have to be reasonable with the taxpayer's money. The issue we should be
concerned with is once you are no longer a Councilmember — at that point can someone request
to go through your computer — how many years can they come and access it.
Councilmember Elvig talked about spreading the money over several months and it doesn't
amount to much.
Councilmember Dehen stated that for what we are buying these computers for, they do not
become junk in four years. He had no qualms about telling the new City Council this is what
they will have.
Mayor Ramsey stated that the bottom line is either the City buys the computers or the
Councilmember buys them and gets reimbursed.
Councilmembers McGlone and Jeffrey stated they are on board with this.
Councilmembers Look and Wise stated they would be in at $600.
City Council Work Session / October 26, 2010
Page 9 of 10
