More
than 400 children participated in the seventh annual Becky Weiss Memorial Bike Road-eo in
May. Assisting the Police Department with the event were the Ramsey Lions, Ramsey Women
of Today, the Weiss family, the Fire Department, members of the Anoka Police Department, and
numerous community businesses and residents.
Several major storms in 1998, gave the City's public safety agencies more opportunities to
prove how capable they are of responding to emergency situations. On May 15, and again on
May 29, hail and high winds damaged property, interrupted utilities and blocked roads with
fallen trees. The Police, Fire and Public Works departments assisted with immediate needs and
with clean up efforts.
Late in 1998, the Police Department received a $1,000 State of Minnesota grant to assist
with snowmobile enforcement. The department's efforts in this area are also supported by the
use of a snowmobile donated by a local dealer and the aid of five volunteers from the Snow
Rams snowmobile club. The Police Department also received a $1,000 Minnesota Safe and
Sober Traffic Enforcement grant. The focus on this grant is seat belt usage and DWI laws.

General Operations

The Ramsey City Council adopted the 1999 tax levy and General Fund operating budget on
December 8, 1999. The certified levy for 1999 is $2,499,462, of which $2,492,669 is for
General Fund operations and $6,793 is for repayment of General Obligation debt.
