this is those occupations that require as one of its bona fide qualifications a mandatory no
smoking rule. An example would be a fire fighter.

Generally, when advertisements are run, the salary range should be included so as not to waste
the applicant's or the City's time. A brief description of the benefits offered may also attract
candidates and is beneficial to include in the advertisement. A brief description of the
organization, i.e., strong points and/or what the City has been recognized for, where the City is
located, and what the atmosphere is like. For example, Ramsey may wish to advertise its free
parking, natural/serene surroundings, and friendly staff to sell the City in job ads, promotional
flyers etc. This can begin to create ownership and gets the applicant thinking about working for
an organization like Ramsey. Obviously, a deadline for submission of application materials
needs to be included.

Advertisements
For discussion purposes, Council may wish to review the list of possible sources.
Staff could

If desired,
develop a more comprehensive list as well.
Pioneer Press - Advertisements are offered in print and are also posted on-line.
Star Tribune - Advertisements are offered in print and are also posted on-line.
Typical Sunday rates run from $12.50 per line/per day. The Tribune's Sunday
metropolitan circulation is estimated at 670,890.
· Local Paper- Anoka Union
· Monster. Corn - Web site
· Minority Focused Media Sources:
One example is the Circle newspaper - printed primarily for the Native American
Community of the Twin Cities and the seven county area. Monthly distribution is
20,000.
Several other minority focused newspapers and radio advertisements are available
should Council be interested in listing specific minority sources for employment
opportunities. ~
· City's web site - When staff is available to update this information, this is a fre~e
service as the City akeady possesses a web page. Staff has created a link to several
other metro area city employment web pages so applicants can see vacancies for other
cities as well.
· Ramsey Job Interest Card - The City distributes job interest cards to interested
applicants when positions are not currently available. Interested parties can complete
the cards and the cards are retained on file for one year. If an applicable vacancy
opens within the year, applicants are mailed out an application for the position they
expressed interest in.

The Commission may also wish to discuss options for finding employees without endlessly
running want ads. Some areas for discussion purposes could include:
· Tapping into workforces.
For example, advertisements could be placed with the Anoka County Workforce
Center. The Minnesota Workforce Center will post the job on the Internet at
"America's Job Bank." Typically this service is free.
