People visiting family or friends pay special attention to our street signs. The conditions of our street
signs may give the visitors their first impression of our public works department. Signs also say
something about the general housekeeping of our community. If visit:ors can easily read our signs and
are able to travel at a reasonable rate of speed, without stopping at every intersection to read the street
sign, their trip will be safer and more enjoyable.

The department's long-range goal for replacement is to start with the higher speed roads in town, This
would consist mainly of the intersections on County and State roads. The number of intersect ions
involved in this phase would number approximately 130. All of these intersections would be fitted with
9-inch sign blades. For the remaining nearly 650 intersections, we would use 6-inch sign blades,

The 1999 budget does not allow for any large-scale sign replacement this year; however, our sign
inventory is Iow, and this is an opportune time to start replacing damaged signs with the new design.
Our replacement cost appears to be in the neighborhood of $200.00 per sign. I will compile complete
information for the upcoming budget meetings. As noted eadier we have a 15-year window to
accomplish this task.

· Page 2
