Above, goats vie for attention as they stare across the farm.

maintenance facility and a dairy facility. "Our dah'y
facility is designed to be the state-of-the-art pilot
facility for pharmaceutical dairying," Smith states.
"I'd like to qualify dairying to mean the endpoint of
the milk that is harvested is destined for
pharmaceutical purification, not consumption."
Because of the pharmaceutical nature, Genzyme
must be concerned with the FDA's rules and
regulations regarding animals, rather than those of
the United States Department of Agriculture. "We
had to take a good hard look," begins Smith, "at
,,~,' conventional dairy practices and building

l~nge 6'

design and combine those with the
pharmaceutical elements. Essentially, what we
have developed is a twin dairy arrangement all
under one rc,.M. What the building consists of is
a dairy on the north wing and a dairy on the
south wing. These are back-to-back mirror
image facilities.

We built our buildings as a result of the need to
house a very unique population of animals.
These were animals we imported from New
Zealand because of their disease freedom. We
have a valuable herd of animals that potentially
have the ability to produce a lifesaving
pharmaceutical in their milk. Consequently, we
needed to maintain these disease-free animals in a
microcosm."

With the number of buildin~; Genzyme has
purchased from lX(orton Buildings, it seems they
have found a trusted fi'lend. "[The people at]
Morton Buildings are great." declares Smith. "We
couldn't be happier. We're planning on a sixth and
potentially a seventh [building]. As well as
extensions on some existing buildings."
