CASE

CONSIDER DRAFT ORDINANCE TO CHANGE NAME
OF FIRE BOARD TO PUBLIC SAFETY BOARD

William Goodrich, City Attorney
Linda Waite Smith, Administrative Services Manager

Background:

Currently, there is not an advisory committee, board or commission where public safety
issues are routinely directed for discussion and formulation of recommendations to the
City Council. In order to promote orderly consideration of public safety issues and
policies, the City Council has expressed a desire to change the name and function of the
current Fire Board so that its activities would apply to public safety functions instead of
just Fire Department functions.

Boards and commissions are established by ordinance and an ordinance is required to
make the desired changes. The attached draft ordinance changes the name of the Fire
Board to the Public Safety Board. It also expands the board's purview to the Police
Department and other public safety functions. Finally, it deletes language that is no
longer applicable to the Fire Department and would not apply to the Police Department.

Council Action:

Review and revise the attached draft ordinance as needed.

Move to introduce the revised ordinance changing the name and function of the Fire
Board to the Public Safety Board.

Reviewed by:

City Administrator
Administrative Services Manager
City Attorney

Also distributed to:

Police Chief
Fire Chief

CC: 11/24/98'
