Many answ~xs reflected a use of the river corridor by people boa~§, fishing, <br />picnicking, walking or hikin~ while othem r~flect usc by nature and wildlife. OveraLl, a clean and serene <br />picture of the future fiver corridor was imagined ~cl expressed by the participant~. <br /> <br />What is MNRRA and how are other communities planning for it?. <br />Following the first exercise members of the tvl]qRRA planning team consisting of staff from the National <br />Park Service, the Minnesota Depa.rtn~nt of Natural Resources and the Metropolitan Council made <br />presentations. Susan Ovcrson from the National Park Service gave an overview of the federal legislation <br />establishing the Critical Area Con'idor and the public participation process used to develop the <br />Mississippi National River and Recreation Area Comprehensive Management Plan. Sandy Fecht from <br />the Minnesota I~partrnent of Natural Resources briefly talked about the role that the DNP, plays in <br />protecting the River Corridor through such tools as zoning and subdivision ordinances. Sandra Pinel <br />from the Metropolitan Council talked about the regional aspect of the Mississippi River Corridor. Sandra <br />also discussed examples of the types of policies that the Metropolitan Council would like Iocal <br />governments to consider adopting as part of their local Comprehensive Plans. <br /> <br />Also presented at the meeting were updates on what other communities ~'¢ doing to plan for the fiver <br />corridor. Scott Schulte from the City of Champlin explaine4 that Champlin is focusing on a plan for the <br />old town part of Champlin, much of which lies within the corridor..rason Osb~'g from the City of Dayton <br />explained that Dayton's objectives are to look at ways of obtaining public ownership of some of the land <br />within the corridor for public open space and preservation and to tie the historic downtown to the river. <br />No representative from the City of Anoka was able to attend the meeting. Issues that Anoka will be <br />focusing on include Kings Island (located on the boarder of Ramsey and Anoka) and how to improve <br />acc~s to Peninsula Point Park. <br /> <br />Exercise."IIow should Ramsey Plan for the Mississ¢pi Paver Corridor" <br />The participants were seated at approximately six tables with each table consisting of roughly six to seven <br />participants.
