CASE #3

ACCESS CLOSURE AT TRAPROCK COMMONS
By: Mark Boos, Parks/Utilities Supervisor

Background:

Since the riding arena was first developed as part of the Traprock Commons subdivision, there
have been two entrances. The primary entrance is from Variolite Street at 157th Avenue. The
easterly entry point is on the opposite side on Traprock Street.

Observations:

The purpose of this case is to recommend vehicular closure of the eastern side. This action is
proposed as the park is frequently used as a cut-through point between Traprock Street and
Variolite Street. The adjoining neighborhood has been frustrated with this activity. Staff
supports closing the east side as it may also reduce the vehicular vandalism. Mayor Gamec has
notified residents in the area regarding the pending action with no objections received.

In terms of making the closure effective, posts (without cable) will need to be added along the
entire 300-foot east side. An Eagle Scout is currently working on a landscape and improvement
proposal for the park. When this is received, staff and the Scouts can install the posts and add
more plantings throughout the site. Mayor Gamec is in the process of identifying to what degree
the arena is being used. Should the east side ever become a desired entrance, it can easily be put
back into service.

Commission Action:

Motion to recommend that City Council direct staff to proceed with the closure of Traprock
Commons riding arena's east side.

Reviewed by:

Copies also distributed to:

Parks/Utilities Supervisor
Mayor Gamec
Director of Public Works

Police Chief

PR:09/10/98

~shared/parks/98 agenda/09
