Memo to Mayor and Council
April 16, 1997

Nick Mueller - Nick's project involved designing, preparation and planting of the large
parking island at Central Park. Approximately 40 Juniper and 10 deciduous trees were
planted. Prior to the planting, Nick's crew used a sod cutter to strip the sod for use in
other areas of Central Park. After the sod was removed, the site was tilled and the plants
were installed. The landscaping was finalized with wood chips and watering. At the
same time, Nick organized the construction of Bluebird houses which were sited in the
southwest portion of the park. The bird boxes were immediately in use. In addition, the
Ramsey Garden Club [1995 award recipient] acted as planting consultants at Nick's
request.

Brian May, Laura Botts, Jody McGillivray and Nik Voelz - Brian, Laura, Jody, and Nik
lead 20 volunteers in the River's Bend tree planting project. After approval from the City
the team obtained right-of-way information from Anoka County's Highway Department
and called for utility locates. A $500.00 donation from the Andover Lion's Club
augmented the donations from Mickman Brothers, Morton's, Wirz and Sloth Brothers
Nurseries. The 29 trees were planted, watered and mulched on a Saturday. The same
group may take on the landscaping of Fox Park this year.

The above constituted the more significant Community Service projects completed last year.
Currently the City is working with more than a dozen individuals at varying stages of
Community Service projects.

As always, please let me know ifI can provide additional information.

/VIB~as

I
I

I
!
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
