City of Ramsey

{Interview Questions Used for Past Commission/Board ApplicantsI

1. What motivated you to apply for this commission vacancy?

2. What experiences have you had that might be relevant to the work of the
commission?

The [ ] Commission meets monthly and these meetings last about two hours.
In addition, there are special meetings to attend, agenda packets to review, and
issues to research. Are you confident you can commit the time required for these
activities?

Consensus by Park and Recreation Commission: We didn't all agree on
this one. Some felt it was obvious that there is a time commitment
involved and should be part of the advertising for the position. I think that
getting commitment up front is important. It seems lately that the level of
our participation has increased and we are meeting a couple times a month
(sometimes more) as well as the prep work involved. This could be
temporary due to town center and some other issues on the table, but right
now it's important that people don't think it's simply a 2-hour commitment
each month.

Park and Recreation Commissioner: This question doesn't seem
necessary. This may be something we would want to post with any
information regarding an opening and then reiterate again either as part of
the intro to the interview or in closing comments to the applicant. The
applicant should feel comfortable in committing this time or should not
apply. Most people will say yes anyway and I have only heard one person
who stated they might have some childcare conflicts. Either way, the
answers are really of no value to us. Either they have the time or they
don't.., if they don't they should not be applying.

4. If you are appointed to our commission, what do you hope to accomplish in your
first term?

Planning Commissioner: This question seriously puzzled me when I
applied. If the applicant is completely new to commission work (like I was),
what answer(s) would be appropriate or anticipated? How would answers
be evaluated? This seems like a question that applies unequally to
experienced vs. inexperienced candidates.

Park and Recreation Commissioner: Many people we interview will be first
time members to a commission. Maybe it would be better to redirect the
question to something like... "If you are appointed to our commission,
what types of issues would you like to focus on and what areas would you
like to learn more about?" Just trying to find out where their interests or
desires lie.

G:~Administration\HumanResources\Commissions\lnterview Questions\Commissioner Comments on Past Interview Questions 09-15.doc
