Ongoing annual expenses would include salary and benefits. Stanton Group Six Cities with full-time Fire Chiefs have an average salary range of $49,200 to $57,564. Ramscy Police Sergeants are currently paid $51,000 annually. Staff is recommending that the Fire Chief salary be established at $51,000 annually. With the addition of benefits, the ongoing annual cost for the position would be $64,541. As an exempt employee, the Fire Chief would no longer receive payment for responding to fire calls or attending drills and officer meetings. Funding for the position could be taken from several areas. Approximately $27,558 can be eliminated from the 1998 Streets and Parks budget requests for additional part-time temporary help. With the addition of a full-time Community Development Assistant, one of the part-time intern positions in Community Development can be eliminated to free up $18,548. Wages paid to the Volunteer Fire Chief in 1996 cost the City $4,139. This money can be reallocated to the salary of a full-time Chief. Comparing the cost of expanding the Fire Chief's position with the original budget requests to add employees, the City can meet most of the identified needs with an additional $64,541 annually instead ors 106,542 annually, a savings of $42,001 annually. COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ASSISTANT This position has been requested to assist both the City Engineer and the Zoning Administrator. Similar to an entry level planning position, the Community Development Assistant position would require a Bachelor's Degree in City Planning or Urban Studies and would not be an exempt position.
