RECOMMEND FIRE CHIEF/DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS APPOINTMENT <br /> <br />By: Linda Waite Smith, Administrative Services Manager <br /> <br />Background: <br /> <br />Several months ago, staff suggested to the City Council in response to staffing needs identified <br />during budget preparation, that effective January 1, 1998, the Fire Chief position be made full- <br />time and that for the three years after that the Fire Chief assume responsibility for supervising the <br />Public Works Department which includes the divisions of Parks/Utilitities and Streets. On <br />September 15, 1997, the City Council approved creation oft he position and authorized staff to <br />post the position internally. <br /> <br />One application was received by the October 1 deadline. The applicant, current Fire Chief Dean <br />Kapler, was interviewed by three members of the City Council on October 13. On the basis of <br />the interview and Chief Kapler's past performance as a part-time City employee, the interview <br />committee is recommending that he be appointed to the position of Fire Chief/Director of Public <br />Works. The annual salary would be $51,000 and the probationary period would be one year, <br />with performance reviews at six and twelve months. <br /> <br />Committee Action: <br /> <br />Recommend that City Council appoint Dean Kapler as Fire Chief/Director of Public Works, <br />effective on or after January 1, 1998, at an annual salary of $51,000 and that Mr. Kapler serve a <br />one-year probationary period in his new position, with performance reviews at six and twelve <br />months. <br /> <br />Reviewed By: <br /> <br />Acting City Administrator <br /> <br />PC 10/14/97 <br /> <br /> <br />
