CASE #

NEW FIREFIGHTER HIRING AND BI-ANNUAL PHYSICAL ABILITY
TESTING PROCEDURE
By: Dean Kapler, Fire Chief

Background:

At the 1996 Minnesota Fire Chiefs Conference in St. Cloud, I was introduced to a Physical Ability
Test for evaluating both new applicants and current f'u:e fighters.

The test consists of seven stations that are considered common tasks on the typical fke ground.
They are:

Ladder Raise
Hydrant Operations
Hose Drag/Carry
Ax Chop
Ladder Carry
Smoke Crawl
Dummy Drag

Enclosed are descriptions of the stations used by the Northwest Hennepin County Fire
Departments. In Ramsey's case, the Ladder Carry station would have to be altered to reflect the
way the Aluminum Roof Ladder is stored on Ramsey's Engine #1.

Recommendation

Staff recommends the Fire Board approve a physical ability test similar to that of the Northwest
Hennepin County for all new hires and bi-annual testing for established firefighters.

Board Action:

Motion to approve a physical ability test similar to the Northwest Hennepin County for all new
hires and bi-annual testing for established firefighters.

Reviewed by:

Fire Chief
City Administrator
Administrative Services Manager

FB: 02/04/97

,/jmt
