CASE #2

PHYSICAL AGILITY TESTING
By: Dean Kapler, Fire Chief

Background:

At the 1996 Minnesota Fire Chiefs Conference in St. Cloud, I was introduced to a physical
agility test for evaluating both new applicants and current firefighters. This seven-stage activity
would replace our current three-stage testing for new firefighters. This program has been
adopted by the North Hennepin Fire Protection Council. I feel it is a much better screen to find if
applicants can do the essential activities required in this occupation.

In addition to the new applicants, I am proposing to have all existing firefighters participate in
the same activity. The frequency would be one time every other year, and we would do this as a
departmental activity. (All current firefighters have completed this activity successfully this
spring.)

A description of the different stations will be available for review.

Recommendation:

Staff recommends the Fire Board approve a physical agility test similar to that of the North
Hennepin Fire Protection Council for all new hires and bi-annual testing for established
firefighters.

Board Action:

Motion to approve a physical agility test similar to that of the North Hennepin Fire Protection
Council for all new hires and bi-annual testing for established firefighters.

Reviewed by:

Fire Chief
City Administrator
Administrative Services Manager

FB: 08/19/97

/jmk
