A planning proposal for:
Mississippi West Regional Park

Anoka County Department of Parks and Recreation

Major Recreational Uses

Swimming Recreation Area

The service area oflvfississippi West Regional Park has very limited outdoor swimming
opportunities. A major draw for the park would be the construction of an outdoor swimming recreation
area. It is important that the swimming recreation area be designed to "draw" a wide cross section of the
population of the service area. It must also offer a water experience that will bring park users back for
repeat usage.

Small Boat Access

The Mississippi River in the area of the Mississippi West Regional Park is a quality fishing
destination. As the water quality of the fiver increases, so does the fishing pressure. The access will
requires site work and will be located in a Iow bank area. Motor size is regulated due to water depth,
reduce bank erosion, and retaining a peaceful park setting.

Trail Head

A trail head facility includes adequate parking for groups of recreational bikers, roller bladers,
runners, and walkers; restrooms; water; shelter, and regional trail information. The trail head would
service the North Ivfississippi Regional Trail and with the crossing of the Highway 169 bridge, the North
Hennepin Regional Trail. Upon the development of Rum River Central Regional Park, the trail head
would seBrice trails nmning north into Anoka County all the way to Lake George Regional Park.

Fishing Access

The entire park frontage on the Mississippi River is an six to fourteen foot high bank. Stair and/or
ramp units are needed to provide access to the river. At the river's edge, floating piers will adjust to the
level of the river. The Department of Natural Resources would assist in locating fishing pier locations.'

Group and' Family Picnic

Group picnic facilities are not unlike other regional parks located in Anoka County. The
Mississippi River offers a dramatic setting. One of the group facilities is designed to accommodate groups
of up to 300 people. The group picnic areas in the area of the proposed bridge are smaller units serving
individual families.

12
