Majbr Recreational Uses
Mississippi West Regional Park_.

Retreat Center
The Mississipp! River and surrounding park lands offer an opportunity for daytime learning and
enfichment experiences for smaller groups. The center could service both the non-profit system and the
profit community. The retreat center uses an existing home (owned by Anoka County and leased to the
Andersons) as a core building. The retreat center is complimented by a retreat outdoor activity area.

Mountain Bike Course

One of the growing recreational demands is mountain biking. The former gravel pit location offers
excellent terrair~ Its location within the park is not be disruptive to other park uses. It is a special fee area
to cover the costs ofraalntainlng and supervising the course. Trails would be laid out to ensure a safe
mountain biking experience.

Pet Area

The Anoka County residents enjoy the outdoor activities with pets. A fenced pet area compliments
the need for controlled pet exercise / training area in a quickly urbanizing area.

Trail Development

Trail development is divided into three levels of use:

Major Park Trail - The major park trail crosses the entire park from east to west providing
an important linkage in the North Mississippi Regional Trail system. An added feature of the trail is a trail
head facility. The trail is designed to accommodate diverse, large group use including bikes, walkers, cross
country skiers, and in-Iine skating.
Park Trails - There is a system of paved wails w/thin IVlississippi West. The park trails
allow park users to move from use area to use area. The Io0p trails are designed to accomraodate diverse,
small group use including bikes, joggers, walkers, cross country skiers, and in-line skating.
Walking' Paths - There is a system of unpaved paths within the park intended for walkers
and hikers only.

Park Road System

The park road system is a "non-loop" layout. The road is set back from the fiver front to maximize
recreational use of the river's edge. It allows full access to 'the park even with two residents. Only two use
areas are delayed until the residents within the park Ieave. Entry into the Mississippi West is controlled by
one entrance / exit at Ramsey Boulevard. A visitor contact station regulates use and collects park fees.

13
