I
I
I
I
I
!
I
I

MEMORANDUM

DATE:

september 17, 1996

TO:

Mayor and City Council

CC:

RYan R. Schroeder, City Administrator
Steve Jankowski, City Engineer

FROM:

Merle Mevissen, Public Works Supervisor

SUBJECT: Closing of 171st Avenue NW

It is my recommendation to leave 171st Avenue NW open between Bison Street NW and Zeolite
Street NW due to usage by school buses and City maintenance vehicles, especially snow plows.

This road was bui!t by the Ramsey Street Department in 1979, at the request of the bus company
and ordered by CitY Council, and it doesn't make any sense to me to close it now because of one
person's complain~ts. If there is a speeding problem out there, that's what we have a Police
Department for. I~also don't believe we need speed bumps throughout the City. The number of
speeders is very s .mall and one or two speeding citations should take care of it. The people in this
neighborhood are~so angry with each other now that I'm afraid something serious is going to
happen out there ahd we don't want that to happen.

We are out there eYery work day checking the barricades. Some days they just need standing up or
putting back on thCroad; however, the legs of the barricades have been stolen several times. The
safety fence has b~en cut so many times it is no longer repairable.

We have more important things to do than get in the middle of a neighborhood feud. I am
requesting you open the road.

/jmt
