ThePark has the usual amenities such as a softball field and
soccer field, and currently boasts the most elaborate play structure in the City.
The Park is somewhat unique in that it is nearly surrounded by water, In fact, the
City just completed a 35-foot bridge to an "island" that will be developed for
picnicking. There are, of course, other attractions in the park such as Ramsey
Garden Club's flower bed at the entrance, or the gazebo near the playground.
Because the above improvements required a significant amount of the Park's
budget, there was nora great deal left for trees and landscaping. To make up for
that, the Garden Club assisted with the flower bed and entry landscape, and the
City was successful in applying for a $5,000 Small Business Administration
grant. The grant, in part, provided for some boulevard trees and over 59 new trees
in the Park. The neighborhood arboretum concept provides residents the
opportunity to view, Fa'st-hand, the different tree characteristics. Approximately
45 uncommon trees have placards at their base to aid in identification. Most of
the trees are 6-10 feet in height, but with care they will soon become specimens
to admire. One tree, valued at $189, has already been destroyed by vandals. The
average cost of the trees was $115, with the Ginkgo at $296, the Tamaracks and
Catalpas at $268 and $230, respectively. Given favorable response, the arbore-
tum theme may be continued with additional plantings, including shrubs and
flowers.
During the next few months, the Park Commission will be reviewing
Emerald Pond Park to determine phase two development priorities. There are
park dedication funds available for the park resulting from new housing in the
park district.
Your input on the park is valued. If possible, place your thoughts and
recommendations in writing, addressed to thePark and Recreation Commission
at City Hall. For additional information on the Park, call Mark Boos, Parks/
Utilities Supervisor, at 427-1410. The Emerald Pond Park is located north of
County Road #116 at 6000 - 142nd Avenue N.W.

Sample of one of the
newly planted trees and
identification pladard.

RUM RIVER WATER
ELEVATION TO BE LOWERED

The Rum River dam in Anoka influences the water
elevation along the river upstream to the Boy Scout
Camp. Each year, the City of Anoka removes boards on
the dam during the last week of October. The removal of
the boards protects th~m from damage during the spring
ice out. This results in the lowering of theriver elevation
by up to three feet. Property owners along the river
should be aware of this and take whatever measures are
necessary to prevent inconveniences caused by the
elevation change. The water level will be returned to the
higher elevation next spring as soon as river ~
conditions allow reinstallation of the boards. Gene
this occurs around the end of Ma~,.
The City of Anoka requests that residents along the
river refrain from disposing of trees, tree limbs or shrubs
into the river. These materials catch on the dam and are
difficult to remove. Also the lowered water level allows
residents along the river to clean the exposed banks of
debris such as old tiros, tin cans, and bottles. Both the
Cities of Anoka and Ramsey appreciate your
cooperation in maintaining the .Rum River.

RAMSEY WOMEN OF TODAY

The Ramsey Women of Today have an exciting
calendar of events planned that will provide community
service as well as a lot of fun!
