Planning Proposal for: <br />Mississippi West Regional Park <br /> <br />Anoka County Department of Parks and Recreation <br /> <br />SOILS (see page 30) <br /> <br />The soils for Mississippi West Regional Park are broadly grouped as either alluvial or sandy: <br /> <br /> The alluvial soils are located within the flood plain zone. They are nearly level and poorly drained. <br />The alluvial soils are composed of sand, loam, and mucky peat from frequent flooding. Recreational use <br />within alluvial soils are limited due to erosion potential and wetness. The concept plan for Mississippi <br />West proposed only river stops within the alluvial soil areas. <br /> <br /> The sandy soils comprise the rest of the proposed Mississippi West Regional Park. The soils are <br />typical of the Anoka Sand Plain landscape type. The soil type is characterized as 0-2% slopes, prone to <br />wind erosion if dismfoed, and excessively drained. The sandy soils of Mississippi West lend themselves to <br />a wide range of recreational uses provided wind erosion and doughtiness are taken into consideration. <br /> <br />FLOOD ZONE (see page 31) <br /> <br /> Mississippi West Regional Park is divided into three land types: first, lands frequently flooded; <br />second, steep banks along the river's edge varying from six to sixteen feet in height; and finally, flat, river <br />blufflands. <br /> <br /> Cloquet and Foster Islands plus a narrow strip of land along the bottom of the steep river bank are <br />flooded frequently. The rest of park does not flood except for very small areas during the 100 year flood. <br />The concept plan for the park proposes only boat launching and shore fishing within the 100 year flood <br />zone. <br /> <br />TOPOGKAPHY (no illustration) <br /> <br /> The topography for Mississippi West is in the range of 0 - 6 percent slopes except for the river <br />bank that is steep. <br /> <br />22 <br /> <br /> <br />
