SUMMARY OF INPUT FROM COMMISSIONERS
RE APPOINTMENT PROCESS

1. Who should interview commission applicants, the commission or the city council?

P&R:
1. Commission definitely should have input because commissioners have best
understanding of what is entailed.
2. Commissioners are Iess subject to political pressures than elected officials.
3. Commissioners have to work the person selected so they want some input.
4. One person would prefer two interviews so Council knows more than the name of the
person they appoint.
5. No objection to having recommendation accompanied by reason for it.
6. No point in having a commission if the Council does the interviewing and appointing.
7. Would recommend that at least two individuals must apply for a position prior to an
appointment being made.

Planning:
1. Commission should interview to keep it from being a political decision.
2. Commission.

EDC:
1. Commission should interview. Council has more time constraints.
2. Commission interview and forward recommendation to Council.
3. Commission should interview candidates because they have a better idea of the
personalities they are looking for. I feel, however, that the council should be aware of
what direction the commission is heading and make decisions based on this.
4. Commission should interview and make a recommendation. Commission members are
the ones who will be in direct contact with the selected candidate.
5. Commission because they are more knowledgeable about what's required. Also,
shares decision making so Council doesn't make all decisions.

Charter:
1. Commission
2. Commission should interview and narrow down candidates, then recommend to
council.
3. Commission should interview candidates and recommend approved interviewees to
Council for interview and approval.
4. I do not see it necessary that Council do the interviewing. I believe the commission
members can do the interviewing and then forward the recommendation to the Council.
