Legal Drinking Age (M.S.A.§340A.503) <br /> <br /> ...At least 21 years of age (no exceptions). It is illegal for minors to possess, consume, <br />or attempt to buy alcohol (misdemeanor). 1989 "shield law" depends upon "due diligence" <br />in I. D. Checking, "It's illegal for us to serve minors, and it's illegal for you to ask." <br /> <br />II. Valid Proof of Age (M.S.A. §340A.503 Sub.6) <br /> <br />(I) Any valid D_rJy_exZa ~ with customerts picture (1991) from any state, <br /> <br />(2) C, aaalliall ~ (1991), <br /> <br />(3) ~ OR Out-of-State-issued non-driving I.D. ~ (with pictures) are <br />also acceptable for proof of age for purchasing alcohol. (As of August 1, 1993. Some <br />other states call their non-driving I. D. 's "ABC Cards"for Alcohol Beverage Control, or <br />"Majority" Cards), <br /> <br />(4) Eare. iga P_asspl/rt, (U.S. Passport is not valid because the subject provides his or her <br />own picture and can use birth certificate for proof of age), <br /> <br />(5) Military. LI)_~, (As of August 1, 1993). <br /> <br />Use of "due diligence" is necessary in checking all I. D.'s. <br />Minn. Licenses for persons "under 21" have a black band at the top <br />"Clipped" Minn. Licenses are valid only when accompanied by a paper permit that has not <br />expired (good 45 days from date of issue). <br /> <br />III. I. D'2 Checking ProcedUres. <br /> <br />1. ~: Personally check anyone whom you suspect is under thirty years of age, even if the <br /> person was supposedly checked already. Be courteous, respectful, and patient. <br /> "I (or We) need to see valid identification. May I see your Driver ts License, please?" <br /> <br />2. ~: Handle the I. D. yourself. Be sure you have adequate lighting. Use an I. D. Checking <br /> Guide (shows examples of out-of-state I. D.'s. To Order: 800-227-8827). <br /> Examine the birth date, expiration date, photo, and other information. <br /> <br />3. lntemlgaR: Orally quiz the subject. Look for clues of nervousness, doubt, or refusal to make <br /> eye contact with you. Demand as much "back-up" identification as you need to be sure. <br /> <br />Other tips: Obtain a signature (compare with signature on the I. D.) and/or copy the I.
