ANOKA COUNTY HIGHXVAY DEPARTMENT POLICY ON BIKEWAYS <br /> <br /> Anoka County encourages the construction of public bikeways along and in <br />the right-of-way of county roads and county state aid highways. Furthermore, <br />Amoka County residents frequently request the continuation of bikeway and <br />parkway construction, especially in areas where both vehicular traffic and residential <br />development are increasing; however, <br /> <br /> Anoka County is also concerned about the safety and well-being of bike <br />riders, pedestrians, and motor vehicle drivers in areas where bikeways and parkways <br />e,'dst;, and, that the Court. ty is exp.eriencinao difficulty in establishing bikeways and <br />parkavays that do not interfere ,ath motor vehicle traffic and which pose potential <br />danger to pedestrians and bike riders; therefore, <br /> <br /> The Anoka County Highway Department has developed the following policy <br />on bikeways: <br /> <br />1) <br /> <br />2) <br /> <br />The initial cost of construction of all bikeways and park7vays will <br />be borne by the city or township or cities and townships involved in <br />the construction of these bikeways or parkw,,ays. <br /> <br />Anoka County will make every effort to accommodate the <br />construction of bikeways and parkways within its right-of-way <br />providing that construction does not hinder or negatively impact <br />the vehicular traffic utilizing the roadway and that the <br />construction of the bikeway and/or parkway meets the following <br />conditions. <br /> <br />a) <br /> <br />Because of the traffic volumes experienced on Amoka County <br />roads and CounW State )fid Highways, no shoulder <br />areas will be designated as bikeways by signing and/or <br />pavement markings. <br /> <br />b) <br /> <br />Cities, Townships and Park authorities will be allowed to <br />utilize paved shoulders as designated bikeways on their maps <br />and brochures where the shoulder surface width, thru lane <br />width, and existing traffic volumes bring the rating of the <br />shoulder to the fair condition in the bikeway design tables <br />as indicated in the Bikeway Design Manual of the Minnesota <br />Department of Transportation dated February 8, 1983 (or <br />subsequent edition). <br /> <br />c) <br /> <br />d) <br /> <br />Ail off road bikeways should be designed in accordance with <br />the Bikeway Design Manual of the Minnesota Department-of <br />Transportation dated February. 8, 1983 (or subsequent edition). <br /> <br />In rural areas, the rn/nimum setback from the travelled portion <br />of the roadway, will be 20 feet, with a preferred setback of <br />30 feet. <br /> <br /> <br />
