MINNESOTA BICYCLE TRAFFIC LAWS AND REGULATIONS

Although a bicycle is not a motor vehicle, by Minnesota law it is a vehicle and laws
governing operation of motor vehicles on the public streets and highways also apply to
the driving of bicycles on such roadways.

Any person driving a bicycle on a public street or highway has the same rights and
responsibilities as the driver of any motor vehicle.

Bicycle drivers must be familiar with and obey all signs, signals and other traffic control
devices just as the operators of motor vehicles.

I
I
I
I

Drive on the right side of the road WITH traffic and obey all traffic signs and
signals.

It is safer for youngsters to drive single file, although the law allows bicycles
to be driven no more than two abreast. On busy streets, driving single file
may be necessary and safer even for more experienced bicyclists.

When preparing to turn, give a hand signal continuously before turning
unless the hand is needed to control the bicycle.

Do not carry any package, bundle or article which prevents the driver from
keeping at least one hand upon the handlebars or from properly operating
the brake.

Do not operate upon a highway any bicycle of such a size as to prevent the
operator from stopping the bicycle, supporting it with at least one foot on
the rad surface and restarting it in a safe manner.

I
I
I
I
I

When entering a roadway from some place other than an intersection, yield
the right of way to all vehicles approaching the roadway to be entered or
crossed.

Carry only the number of persons for which the bicycle is designed and
equipped.

Never hitch onto a truck, car or other moving vehicle.

Do not drive a bicycle on a sidewalk within a business district.

10.

Do not operate upon a highway any bicycle equipped with handlebars so
raised that the operator must elevate his/her hands above the level of
his/her shoulders in order to grasp the normal steering grip area.
